Here at California Classics, we
follow the Woodwork Institute of California's manual of millwork
unless noted otherwise. As such, we recommend following guidelines
found in the manual for storage, handling, finishing and installation.
We have listed a few of the more important ones below.
Storage and handling:
Store doors flat, 4" off
the ground and in mild conditions with plastic loosely wrapped all
sides to keep
construction debris off.
Allow product to acclimate 2-3 days to
typical conditions for local area.
Remove any excess glazing compound from wood and
glass. Make sure that glass is not scratched during this process.
Block sand all wood product to remove
handling marks, raised grain, etc.
Mask glazed areas 1/16" away from
the wood to allow the finish to lap onto the glass and fill the voids
to assure a good seal.
Finishing:
Apply finish per manufacturer's
directions. Please note that the W. I. C. has recommended guidelines
for comparing exterior finish durability.
Please note that all hardware, weather
strip, screens, etc. must be removed prior to finish.
It is recommended that the backs of
door and window frames be sealed with the same finish as the doors and
windows prior to installation.
Apply final finish per directions to
all six sides of doors and sash.
Installation:
Hire a qualified installer!
Shim jambs in rough openings every
18" around the perimeter and no further than 6" from any
corner.
Make sure the units are level, square
and plumb. Use string to cross sight the frames. This will verify that
the jamb legs are parallel.
Windows and pre-hung doors should be
set with the sash/door installed in the frame with locks engaged in
strikes. Shim the unit for equal reveals around the perimeter and
proper operation of all hardware.
